ABOUT THE ROLE
TransAlta is currently recruiting for a Plant Operator to support our Ada Generation facility. Reporting to the Plant Manager, the Plant Operator will be responsible for supporting various operator functions on a 12-hour shift schedule.
This role is based out of our Ada, Michigan site and is a full-time salaried, safety-sensitive position. The successful candidate will be required to complete pre-employment testing.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
As a Plant Operator, you are responsible to perform the following, including but not limited to:
Learn and maintain a thorough understanding of plant equipment, systems and processes. Remain apprised of changes to plant systems.
Maintain detailed hand-written and electronic shift logs.
Monitor, assess and control plant operation to ensure compliance with established procedures, technical references, OSHA and MIOSHA requirements, environmental permitting and industry best practices.
Recognize and appropriately respond to alarms, changing plant conditions and system upsets.
Anticipate plant responses to operator inputs and to changes in utility and steam host demands.
Test water chemistry, analyze results and batch daily chemical additions to maintain normal ranges.
Perform routine minor maintenance checks / inspections on plant equipment, sign off work orders in SAP and initiate work requests in SAP to document equipment issues.
Proficiently start up and shut down the plant and its systems, including handling plant upsets and unexpected trips.
Clearly communicate, verbally and in writing, with coworkers, contractors and managers.
Work with staff and contractors to develop and implement safety-related permitting including Lockout/Tagouts, confined space permits, hot work permits etc. to protect the health and safety of personnel during maintenance activities.
Coordinate and oversee contractor activities to protect the health and safety of workers.
Complete assigned health and safety training in a timely manner.
Participate in periodic procedure review and update initiatives.
Contribute to improving plant training materials and staff learning.
Maintain preparedness for emergency response situations such as fire, health & safety and environmental incidents.
Participate in the incident management system and near-miss program, reporting incidents in the Synergy database.
Complete assignments as directed by the Plant Manager.
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
To be successful in this role, we are looking for the following must-have qualifications and experience
Minimum of 3 years operating experience in a power generation or steam generation facility. Relevant experience in electrical or mechanical fields will be considered. Gas turbine experience preferred.
Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Willingness to work in various weather conditions and irregular hours, as required

Hourly base rate starting at USD $33 to $36 dollars per hour. The final agreed-upon base salary is based on the successful candidate(s) qualifications and experience.
